04 · Condition monitoring & diagnostic analysis

Engine Performance Monitoring & Diagnostic Analysis

We measure combustion pressure in every cylinder while the engine is running using a portable combustion pressure analyzer, and combine it with the vessel's operating data to build a complete picture of engine condition. No dismantling, no interruption to operations, and every result is analysed by UMJ engineers with clear recommendations.

Measure.Detect.Decide.Optimize.

Risk 1

Overhaul too early

Serviceable components are replaced prematurely, wasting spare parts budget and downtime.

Risk 2

Overhaul too late

Minor wear develops into major damage, leading to off-hire and multiplied repair costs.

One question

When did you last know, with certainty, the combustion condition of every cylinder?

Symptoms such as black smoke, rising fuel consumption and uneven exhaust gas temperatures are often noticed too late.

Advanced diagnostics for higher reliability

Engine monitoring & performance measurement

Five benefits for ship operators

Objective monitoringActual condition of main and auxiliary engines based on digital data
Early detectionPerformance loss becomes visible before it turns into damage
Failure preventionPrevents more serious operational failures
Data-driven decisionsMaintenance decisions backed by measured data
Optimised cost & downtimeOptimal maintenance intervals and less unplanned downtime

What you get

Three insights that matter most

INSIGHT 01

Engine performance, cylinder by cylinder

Not just "the engine runs fine", but how well each individual cylinder is performing.

  • Pcomp and Pmax for every cylinder
  • Load balance between cylinders
  • Indications of injector, timing, ring/liner and valve issues
INSIGHT 02

Right-timed overhauls

Condition-based overhaul planning instead of running hours alone.

  • Which cylinders need attention first, and which are still serviceable
  • Overhaul intervals can be extended when condition allows
  • Better-planned docking and spare parts procurement
INSIGHT 03

Measurable maintenance costs

Every maintenance expense is backed by inspection findings and recommendations.

  • Spare parts budgets built on actual findings
  • Potential fuel savings from optimised combustion
  • Clear data for management decisions and budget approval

Advanced diagnostics

Normal pressure does not always mean a healthy engine

Cylinder pressure shows the symptom. Ultrasound (acoustic emission), read together with pressure, helps identify the root cause. Available as an advanced service on request.

PRESSURE

Tells you what is happening. Cylinder pressure curves, Pmax, Pcomp and load balance.

ULTRASOUND

Tells you why it is happening. Acoustic emission analysed alongside pressure for a combined diagnosis.

Load deviation of each cylinder from the engine average (%). Limit ±5%; three cylinders out of range. Taken from an actual measurement, with vessel details withheld.

FINDING
Cylinder 1 is overloaded (+12.1%). Cylinders 3 and 5 are underloaded (−5.5% and −7.6%).
RECOMMENDATION
Inspect the injectors and fuel pumps of cylinders 1, 3 and 5, readjust fuel distribution, then re-measure.
IMPACT
Prevents excessive thermal load and premature wear on cylinder 1, and restores an even load across all cylinders.

Service packages

Two levels of inspection

Basic reads combustion condition cylinder by cylinder. Comprehensive extends the analysis to fuel and lube oil efficiency, engine layout and propeller performance.

Pmax, Pcomp, MIP and indicated power are measured directly by the UMJ team. Additional data such as draught, weather and propeller data deepen the hull/propeller efficiency analysis.

How it works

Five steps from scheduling to follow-up

  1. PreparationScheduling, package selection and data checklist
  2. MeasurementOn board, with the engine in operation
  3. AnalysisData processed and evaluated by UMJ engineers
  4. ReportTechnical report and results presentation
  5. Follow-upRepairs carried out by UMJ where required

You receive: a technical report, per-cylinder charts and a prioritised action list.
